David Davis stood down from Parliament to trigger a by election, because he was so disturbed by the government's win on the 42 day detention bill.

I will do anything i can: donating money, helping campaign, manning a phone bank - whatever will help him win re-election with a majority to show the government how people really feel.

• Finally we have a politician making a strong stand against the systematic erosion of civil liberties we've seen in this country over the last 15 years or so.
  
  If Labour do not field a candidate, it will show that they are not confident of their arguments for such erosions of civil liberties.

• Bravo to David Davis for giving his constituents the chance to shout back against the erosion of Liberty in Britain. Shame on those MP's who twiddle with their order papers and ignore their responsibilities to represent and protect the ancient rights of their constituents.

• At last a politician whom I can respect. We live in a society that is fast becoming a Police State. My experience is that if you upset them (police) they will penalise you. I reported a policeman's car blocking my driveway and a few days later they reported me (wrongly) as unfit to drive to the DVLA. I wrote to the Police and they ignored my letter. They even quote the STASI phrase "if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear".

• At last a politician showing some back-bone. This country is on the way to a totalitarian state the way our freedoms are being eroded.

• I'm a committed old-fashioned, unreconstructed Socialist and I wish I lived in East Yorkshire to help David Davis campaign on the doorstep. Maybe this will finally help New Labour realise that their authoritarianism is damaging the UK and that protecting our civil liberties is how to in about "taking terrorism seriously".

• In my opinion, these are dangerous times for the libertarian wing of the Conservative party. A defeat for Davis would strengthen the authoritarians in the party and could lead to Cameron failing to fulfil his promises to revoke some of Labour's more repressive legislation should the Tories win the next election.
  
  If you value your civil liberties, whether or not you are a Tory, you should support Davis in this by-election because we don't want the next government to be dominated by authoritarian Conservatives.

• David Davis has accurately read the mood of the country and, thankfully, brought to a head the festering resentment of millions of people who do not wish to sleepwalk further into a police state / surveillance society. It is, perhaps, ironic that of all the Fourth Estate which would, at one time, have believed the protection of our civil liberties to be a primary duty, only the voices of The Observer's indefatigable Henry Porter and The Guardian's Joan Bakewell have been consistently raised in opposition to the slow, and now not-so-slow erosion of everything we hold dear. (Personally, I am opposed to the reintroduction of the death penalty under any circumstances whatsoever - but this is, and must, I hope remain, a matter for individual MPs' consciences.) Thank goodness Davis has spoken out in the face of Cameron's apparent fixation with opinion polls. Very best wishes for the success of a vital campaign.

• I am inspired by David Davis to take action on this subject. I have just set up my own pledge to write to my MP to outline my grave concerns. I hope that people who see this might be able to do their bit for liberty by pressuring their MP.

• The three main parties have forgotten democracy and now pursue only votes and power at any price and without shame. You have to be brave to stand up against this tide of indifference.

• I don't agree with his action and think he has done a lot of harm to the conservative Party of which I am not a member.
  However my wife and I spent 10 years of our teen age years in the Armed Forces during the Last War and lost many friends and think he is wrong to put Human Rights before the fight against Terrorism.
  I would like to write to him more fully with my views but have searched everywhere I can think of trying to find a way to contact him without success so would welcome any help via my e-mail address above.

  I had no trouble finding the former shortly after his resignation speech or the latter when it launched last week.
  
  The polls since his resignation show the Tories maintaining or even increasing their solid lead over Labour, so I don't know why you think this has damaged the Tory party.
  
  Also there's no evidence (even the govt concedes this) that the police currently need an extension on the current 28 day limit for the pre-charge detention of terrorist suspects so I think your charge of putting human rights before terrorism is misplaced.
